Xbox One and done?

Naturally we’ve been following the Xbox One news closely on Agoners. Everything announced so far is barely even related to agonistic gamers’ concerns, which is a bad thing in and of itself really. As we’ve commented on before, Microsoft has been moving on a steady track away from everything agoners care about when it comes to gaming for some time now, and I wasn’t surprised to see the Xbox One become a culmination of that at all. There have been […Full Story…]

XBox 360 Fighting Games - Do they have effective skill matchmaking?

While I was writing my follow-up to my previous article about competitive gaming design using case examples, I got sidetracked into a very interesting debate on David Sirlin’s Fantasy Strike forums. I’ve linked it here, in case you want to read it all, but I will attempt to summarise the major points of it here. David Sirlin (and one other poster on the site) were insistent that all Xbox 360 fighting games have functioning true-skill based matchmaking. Here’s a quote […Full Story…]

The XBox Live Fail Update

The Xbox Live Fall Fail Update Late last autumn there was the usual “Fall Update” to Xbox 360s connected to  Xbox Live, this year with the moniker (as is the trend these days) of the “Metro” update. I hoped to write about this when it was more topical, but I wanted to wait until I’d had a chance to try out all of the new features myself, and also the typical holiday festivities got in the way 🙂 . However […Full Story…]

"Like" Raptr on facebook and potentially win some games

Raptr’s doing a nice publicity promotion on facebook right now, so I thought I’d help them out with it too. If you “like” their page on facebook here, you can be in with a chance to win every Valve game on Steam. Not bad, and your chance of winning is much higher than some silly national lottery, and what’s more it doesn’t cost you a thing. Secondly, whilst raptr still has quite a few issues from time to time and […Full Story…]

The Independent Remy Show

Agoners are obviously fans of actual game mechanics over graphics and movie-like experiences etc, and so naturally we’re very interested in the “indie” games scene. The XBox Live Indie Game (XBLIG) service interests me the most as it’s pretty unique amongst TV-based games systems, and in theory, should offer some nice quality control and ways to find and sort games that would be to my taste. Sadly thanks to lacklustre efforts by Microsoft on their dashboard to support a system […Full Story…]

The Ironic Review Review

With the new summer dashboard update for the XBox 360, it’s interesting to note they’ve finally added one of the features I’d suggested a while ago – some kind of game review ratings system on XBox Live. Whilst the feature is still far from the way I would’ve implemented it, it’s a nice start. There is an obvious immediate flaw, as many have pointed out, that you can “Rate” any content without even buying it or even downloading a demo. […Full Story…]

To the spirit of a fighter

There’s an article forthcoming on my full thoughts on Street Fighter IV, but I think it’s a summary enough to say for now that I’m no longer playing or following the game very much at all. However as long pre-supposed here on agoners, the main reason for the excitement around SF4 was not SF4 itself, but its position as a flagbearer for the return of the 2d fighting game scene in general. And what a return it has been! 🙂 […Full Story…]

Ultimate Achievement Unlocked: MACROSS Gamerscore

I WIN!!!11! olol Far more fun than racking up a huge pointless gamerscore… 😀 This historic moment deserves to be captured for posterity: It doesn’t get much better than this in Gamerscore land. MA KU RO SU Special thanks go to an unlikely set of games that made this possible: Sonic the Hedgehog (original XBLA), Doritos Dash of Destruction – both of which I got free, and Senko No Ronde (Wartech) which I’m actually rather enjoying at my utter newbie […Full Story…]

Another Team Shitty X Classic

In case you hadn’t already realised, myself and Navan’s piss-take neophyte gaming ‘clan’ Team Shitty Shotty has branched out into so many fields now that it’s become known as Team Shitty X, or just TSX. We now have a theme song, the Scatman, and has a variety of specialised gaming divisions: Team Shitty Shotty – for the common arena of games such as Gears of War and Halolz, where Team Shitty X made its first impact. Team Shitty Clicky – […Full Story…]

Nov 252008

First off, let me say I love achievements. The reason why I’ve moved from being a rabid PC gamer to a sell-out console gamer has a lot to do with the lusty lure of achievements. They change the way we perceive games, they give a lasting physical presence to the time that we’ve wiled away mashing those 4 colourful buttons on the controller. However, in game design terms, they have to be vary carefully written. A single achievement can add […Full Story…]

To strive, to seek, to find, and not to Achieve

Well, the release date is now known and even the Achievements for Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix have been leaked which makes this an ideal time for me to discuss some more of my thoughts on XBox Achievements. When I first got my 360, my first reaction was “what is the point in this?”. But the more I’ve played with them though, I have come around to liking them; but only when they are actually fun. I like […Full Story…]

Date Pls Crapcom!??

I seriously want the release date soon as I want to book the days off work… 🙁 If I get the date too late it increases the chances I won’t be able to. Rah! Mind you, it’s not like I don’t have enough to keep me occupied at least. The ‘NXE’ is out tomorrow, and I’ve been playing more on The Orange Box, Gears of War 1 & 2, Lost Odyssey, Castle Crashers.. and more. I’ve also got a list […Full Story…]
