Bastion - Review

Format: PC Reviewer: Remy77077 Approximate Time Spent playing at time of writing: 22 hours Modes of play: Single Player, Online Leaderboards Bastion looks & sounds really pretty and it’s quite novel these days to see an action adventure game from an overhead isometric viewpoint rather than a 3D one. This gives rise to more space related gameplay as it’s much easier to judge the overall action from your overhead viewpoint & play more tactically. Controls [...Full Story...]

Apple Jack 2 - Review

Format: Xbox Live Indie Games Reviewer: Remy77077 Approximate Time Spent playing at time of writing: 19 hours Modes of play: Single Player Apple Jack 2 is basically another 61 levels of Apple Jack. So there’s not too much to add to my previous review of that as it really is more of the same. Jack still comes with an immensely appley head, the levels are still incredibly varied and fun and the challenge levels [...Full Story...]

Apple Jack - Review

Format: Xbox Live Indie Games Reviewer: Remy77077 Approximate Time Spent playing at time of writing: 36 hours Modes of play: Single Player Apple Jack is a fantastic platform game with great puzzle elements. It’s emphasis varies greatly from level to level, however it’s generally more on the platforming ‘execution’ side than the puzzle solving, but both feel significant. As a gameplay blend and as a challenge, this is a really fantastic title that hits a [...Full Story...]

Thomas Was Alone - Review

Format: PC Reviewer: Remy77077 Approximate Time Spent playing at time of writing: 5 hours Modes of play: Single Player This is another puzzle-platformer style single player game. It’s immediately comparable to lots of it’s contempories – VVVVVV and Apple Jack were the two games it reminded me most of, except Thomas Was Alone is far easier & shorter than either of those. I completed everything in Thomas Was Alone, including getting every Achievement in under 5 hours & [...Full Story...]

Possibly interesting competitive games - SpyParty, Hero Academy, Skulls of the Shogun

Here’s a quick note of a few new competitive games to go on the Agoners radar that I’ve picked out of all the news (and noise!) around. SpyParty is an asymmetric multiplayer espionage game that could certainly be interesting. I’ve come across it before a few times and read a few articles by it’s designer but this update about it doing a part of it’s beta test at EVO got my attention again. Hero Academy sounds like it could actually [...Full Story...]

The XBox Live Fail Update

The Xbox Live Fall Fail Update Late last autumn there was the usual “Fall Update” to Xbox 360s connected to  Xbox Live, this year with the moniker (as is the trend these days) of the “Metro” update. I hoped to write about this when it was more topical, but I wanted to wait until I’d had a chance to try out all of the new features myself, and also the typical holiday festivities got in the way . However this [...Full Story...]

VVVVVV - Review

Title: VVVVVV Format: PC Reviewer: Remy77077 Approximate Time Spent playing at time of writing: 12 hours Modes of play: Single Player VVVVVV is a platform game with some interesting mechanics and a fair amount of variety and challenge. Your controls are very simple as you can only move left or right, interact with certain parts of the screens (although this is only for saving, teleporters and flavour text and map unlocks), and instead of a jump, you can flip gravity. The Independent Remy Show

Agoners are obviously fans of actual game mechanics over graphics and movie-like experiences etc, and so naturally we’re very interested in the “indie” games scene. The XBox Live Indie Game (XBLIG) service interests me the most as it’s pretty unique amongst TV-based games systems, and in theory, should offer some nice quality control and ways to find and sort games that would be to my taste. Sadly thanks to lacklustre efforts by Microsoft on their dashboard to support a system [...Full Story...]
